According to Music Africa Awake Reporter:
Africa’s most famed and respected artistes are hooking up to create a range of electrifying musical fusions on “Coke Studio”, a 16-week music show on ZBCTV.
Artistes, including the likes of Oliver Mtukudzi, Mi Casa, Cassper Nyovest and The Mahotella Queens, amongst others united in their shared passion of music.During the programme artistes from different genres and backgrounds pair up, fuse their styles and come up with a new track within three days. The entire song-making process, from start to finish, is caught on camera giving audiences a “fly-on-the-wall” look into how the music is made.
Viewers can watch their favourite musicians in action, witness all the behind-the-scenes drama and listen to each artist perform their fusion track .
“Coke Studio is all about bringing African talent together to create fresh and interesting music. We have chosen some of Africa’s best artists and challenged them to use what makes them unique – their background, their nationality, their musical genre – and fuse it with someone else’s. The product would be something never been seen or heard before,” says Vee Chibanda, Brand Manager Coca-Cola Zimbabwe.
The show has also opened doors for undiscovered talent in Africa with “Coke Studio RAW”.
RAW was introduced to give struggling, talented artistes who are not signed to a label, a chance to break into the industry.
RAW artistes were given two days in a professional studio to work up a track with two up and coming producers. Eight of the 16 artists from RAW made it into Coke Studio and will be featured on the show.
“From generation to generation, music has been and will always be a means of expressing ourselves. It stirs our emotions and enhances our lives. From Hip-Hop to Pop and Jazz, music makes the soul happy. ‘Coke Studio’ is about pushing boundaries, exploring the length, breadth and depth of musical possibility and ultimately keeping a diverse Africa a little more connected,” said Chibanda.
“Coke Studio” will air on ZBCTV every Tuesday at 6.30pm.
